Question
HI I HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD HORSFIELD TORTOISE AND I WOULD LIKE TO BUY ANOTHER ONE OF THE SAME BREED AS I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CANNOT PUT DIFFERENT BREEDS TOGETHER BUT COULD YOU ADVISE ME ON WHAT SEX TO GET? I HAVE A FEMALE AT THE MOMENT WHICH UNFORTUNATELY AFTER EXTENSIVE TESTS WITH THE VET SHE IS BLIND SO I THOUGH IF I GOT ANOTHER TORTOISE IT MIGHT HELP HER AS WELL,COULD YOU GIVE ME SOME ADVICE PLEASE,KIM

Answer
Hi Kim, I would definitely advise that you get a second female to avoid the aggressive breeding behaviour that would result with a male. Horsfields/Russians have a rather violent breeding style that involves the male circling the female and attempting to bite her head and front legs. They can inflict serious damage and your blind female would be particularly vulnerable to injury.
