how do i tell what type of snake i have

I would have to see a picture of the snake, know what area you found it in (like what state and if it was in bushes, near water etc.) How big it is, what it looks like, described as well as possible.

If you want to research it yourself then go to Google or another search engine and type in the description like "Snake red green black stripe" somewhat like that and probably your state as well and see what results come in. Take your results say you get 3 different kinds. Then go too http://www.google.com/imghp and type in the name of the snake, you will get multiple pictures of that kind of snake. Compare it to the one you have. That should give you an idea.
