newt and frogs

Question
QUESTION: i have 6 california native tree frogs that i caught and are living in a tank. i recently caught two newts and i put them in there too. i had them in there for maybe 30 mins while i looked up the newt on the internet. originally i thought it was a salamander but i found it is a california coastal range newt. then i read that they produce toxins and are poisonous so i immediately took them out. but then i read on that they live fine with frogs. so now im confused. i have two questions; can this type of newt and my california tree frogs live together? and if they cant did i put them at risk for putting the newts in there for that sort amount of time? by the way, they seemed fine while they were in there too. they just found a shady corner and rested and actually a couple frogs slept with them like companions. but that also worries me. if you have any answers id greatly appreciate itt. THANKS :]

ANSWER: Dear Michelle,
thank you for your question.
Most newts (and frogs) produce toxins, but usually only very mild ones, enough to taste bad for any predator that comes along. So the frogs should be fine. But I still recommend keeping the frogs and newts in different tanks because it's much easier to care for their specific needs then, they have different habitats and it's usually hard to keep the right conditions for two species in one tank, even if the species come from the same area.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer

QUESTION: ooh okay. well they said on most websites that if even a human ate just one of the newts they'd die....?

Answer
You're right, the newts are very toxic, although I haven't been able to find exact information on the lethal dosis for humans. But I wouldn't handle them with bare hands. I still think that the frogs are fine because they didn't try to attack the newts and the newts didn't feel threatened by them. The toxin also acts fast and and frog that got a mouthful would be dead already.
