Question
hi i was thinking of getting a pet snake with a temperament of a corn snake. i
was wondering if there are any hardy snakes such as corn snakes that eat
crickets.
thank you
luke

Answer
Hi Luke, The rough and smooth green snakes are insectivores but lack the hardiness and calm temperament of corn snakes. All of the ones that I worked with were quite nervous and flighty. Most of the ones in the pet trade are also wild-caught. They can make a nice display animal but I would not recommend handling them. Their care is a bit more like a lizard then a snake. They should be offered crickets at least a couple times per week and need a calcium/vitamin supplement as well.
Corn snakes and king snakes do not need to be fed live rodents (if that is what is keeping you from getting a corn snake). They routinely take frozen (thawed) rodents which can be purchased at most stores that sell reptiles.
