Leopard gecko lizzard

Question
My son, Tanner, just got a lizzard (Nigel) a few weeks ago and hasn't really found any information about shedding its skin.  Do the leopard geckos shed their skin at a certain age or is this an annual shedding?  We appreciate any information you can provide regarding the shedding process.  Thank you very much.

Answer
As reptiles grow they shed the outer skin.  Babies will shed constantly because they are growing.  Adults will shed less, but once or a few times a year according to their species.  Leos need humidity to help their shedding, they need a humid hide and extra mistings during this time, a rock like a paving stone in the cage is also great as a scratching post to help rid themselves of this shed.  Also be careful watching how their feet are shedding.  Retained shed in those tender areas can cause a tourniquet effect and they can lose toes as a result.  If you suspect retained shed, get him to a good reptile vet and learn from him/her the proper way of assisting your leo in removing shed from the feet, the gecko toe has probably one of the most fascinatingly complex physiology in the animal kingdom.  Also it is quite normal if the gecko eats his shed, so don't be alarmed by it.
