QuestionI have a baby 2 year old med greek spurred thighed tortoise, and have been advised not to hibernate her until she is about 5 years old, she is not eating very much only every other day, she eats a few weeds then goes back to sleep, the following day she will not awake at all, then she awakes the following day and eats something then goes back to sleep again, I have put a higher heat bulb 60 watt in her vivaruim so the tempreture is around 86 degrees, I think she is trying to hibernate which I do not want her to do, is the tempreture correct or does she need her vivarium a little hotter, or what can you suggest, please could you help.
Thank you,
Christina
AnswerHi Christina
I unfortunately have no personal keeping experience with these wonderful reptiles but here is a link that I think that you will find helpful
http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/safer.html
If I have read this correctly-you are not supposed to allow or encourage a tortoise from a warm/tropical climate to hibernate
I believe that this section(keep scrolling down until you reach it as it is a long way down the page ) will provide the answers that you need to safely get your tortoise through the winter
OVER-WINTERING OR NON-HIBERNATING
Good Luck with him
