QuestionI have a Knight anole that I "rescued" from the garden about a year ago (he's invasive and it gets too cold here in the winter). He has been doing great eating mealworms and an occasional lizard. Today I noticed that one of his eyes doesn't look right and may be infected. Is there anything I can do for this. I cannot afford to go to a vet. Also, how much should he be eating? He is still young since he is not nearly as big as the ones that I have seen at the zoo. His body is about 6" long (not including the really long tail). He has been eating everything I give him from a dish(about 6 mealworms a day), but he looks a bit round to me (when I first took him in he would not eat on his own so I hand fed him and he would only eat 2 - 3 mealworms or crickets, flavored with a little of my thumb!). I tried to get a picture of him with his eye, but he keeps turning brown (he's mad) and the picture didn't turn out good.
Answer Knight anoles have attitude like a tokay gecko. You have to consider that although a non-native, invasive species, he's still wild caught, and wild caughts just don't do as well as captive bred reptiles. Since he is a non-native, he shouldn't be released. The thing is, medical issues should be seen by a reptile veterinarian, and since you can not afford one at this time, it may be better, for the sake of the anole, to bring him to a reptile rescue that will have him treated. Eyes are so sensitive, and so important to a hunter like a reptile, home remedies are just not good enough when you don't know the cause.
