Question
I have a new type of snake showing up in my yard in southeast Idaho.  We live at 6000 feet elevation if that helps.  I recently purchased some sod to fill in part of my yard.   I know that there are rattle snakes in the area where I purchased the sod.  We have now seen three of the new snakes and they are all under 1 foot long.  The snake I am looking at in a jar is about 8" long.  It is light grey to brown in color on the sides and back.  The back almost looks as if it has a brown stipe on the ridge of the back, especially toward the snake's head.  The belly is grey.  It has a black slender head.  The markings on the body look like diamonds.  There are two rows of what could be called diamonds on each side, with the diamond marks offset.  The tail is very slender and grey.

Any ideas?

thank you
Charlie

Answer
Hey Charlie,

this one if you could i need a pic you can send it to xmstuff@optonline.net  yuo have described what could be three differant species it is tuff to tell at this size or as babys but a pic would do it. it is either a baby rattler(western diamondback)Poisinous!! or a baby grey ratsnake,or western grey garter.but because of the poisin factor would like a pic.

thanks for the question hope to hear back from you .
