Question
QUESTION: i got a chinese water dragon about 2 months ago, and he is about 11" long. since i have had him we have had a few lighting problems, which are now fixed with the correct uva and uvb bulbs.he is still small, and eats about two crickets or 5-6 mealworms a day, with a small salad.i havent seen him eat his "Salad"but i know he is eating well.since i have had him he has not shed like i have been told he should.what do i do?

ANSWER:   How are you measuring your temperatures?  If it is a stick on gauge, you may not be getting accurate readings.  Get a patio thermometer with a probe that you can get from Walmart's for under $15.  Put the probe directly on the basking area and make adjustments.  Also have his checked by a good reptile vet for high parasite load in the gut due to being relocated.  If the lighting is over 6 months old or no one knows how long, replace the UVB source with a new one.  Do not use coil or compact types, only linear tubes like the Reptisun 10.0 fluorescent or a Mega-ray mercury vapor type.

QUESTION: the gauges are the stick on kind, and the light is a zilla reptile light with a uva and uvb bulb in it. whatexactly is a probe? im not exactly sure how o install one. would i just put it on the tank? as for a vet, im afraid that might be too expensive of a visit if it turns out to be something i can do nothing about, or if the medicine is too costly. is there any other way i can go about this?is there a number i can possibly call about my animal to see what it might cost? or a number to call for more answers? thak you for the help and advice it is greatly appreacited

Answer
The digital thermometer is like a small box the size of a cell phone.  There is a wire with a probe on the end, a small plastic sensor that will give a far more accurate reading.  The box can stay outside and the probe can be laid on the basking spot.
Now, the lighting is not what you need.  If the bulb is fairly new return it and get a Reptisun 10.0 LINEAR UVB fluorescent tube, get a fixture for it.  Then also get a dome fixture and use a regular household bulb.  As it gets colder a 100 watt will warm a basking spot nicely.
Go to www.arav.org and use their directory to find a good reptile vet.  The receptionist will know the charge for an initial visit and a fecal test.  You can also see if there is a vet school near you, there may be a clinic that would be more affordable.
