Bringing a new, younger rabbit home.

Question
Hi Gina and Kim,
I have an English dwarf (Flossie) who is about 6 years old and up until last week has lived in harmony with our persian cat. Unfortunately the cat had to be destroyed last week as his kidneys failed and I would like to know if it is wise to bring another rabbit in to our home as company for Flossie. She has been off her food and seems a little withdrawn since the cat has gone. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated as we do not wish to cause her any distress by bringing in a younger rabbit which may cause her upset.
Thanks in advance for your help
Best Regards
Steve Cox (London, England)

Answer
It sounds as if she is missing her buddy.  Certainly rabbits go through mourning, and some rabbits have been known to die because they are so depressed at losing their friend.

You could give her lots more affection to make up for the lack of a buddy, or you can try a new friend.  If you decide to try another rabbit, be sure to read this FAQ on how to bond rabbits - http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/introductions.html
