Question
Hi! i was just wondering if you by any chance new what to do when a cat attacks a rabbit or another small mammal, i know that you are saying you know about tame rabbits but healing rabbits should be the same concept even if they're wild or tame. you see i have been researching on the Internet what to do when a cat attacks an animal and all the sights say that a cat has bacteria in their mouth's that will infect the animal and eventually kill them. the sights say that you need to get antibiotics from a vet to help them... and the sights also say that you should probably just take them to the vet, this is where you come in i was wondering if you had an alternative for going to the vet, so that i could just help the animal without the extra cost or inconvenience of going to the vet or a clinic. so do you know of a antibiotic that will be cheap that i can just buy to stop the bacteria in my cats mouth from killing the animals she catches?
thank you so much... it would be a great help even if you cant help me, just for you to read this

Answer
Dear Amanda,

The most important thing to do for a small animal that has been bitten or scratched by a cat is to cleanse the wound carefully with dilute povidone iodine solution, to remove as much bacterial contamination as possible.  It is then wise to put the rabbit on a course (at least 7 days) of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as enrofloxacin (Baytril) or ciprofloxacin, either of which can be given at a dose of 15-20mg/kg twice per day.  You will need a prescription, however, and should consult a vet about this.

DO NOT use any type of penicillins, as these are deadly to rabbits.

I hope this helps.
