swollen testical

Question
We did have 2 male mini rex rabbits.  Last week one of owr rabbits had a swollen testical that he scratched (we are guessing that is what happened) and he tore the sack and his testical came out.  We took him to the vet and they didn't know why this happened.  They said they could do surgery which was going to be very expensive and they doubted if he would make it  through the surgery.  Long story short we had to have him put down.  It was a hard and heart breaking decision.  Now our other rabbit has the same thing.  One of his testicals is enlarged.  Have you ever heard of this?  Is it an infection since bother rabbits seem to have it?  We also have a dwarf rabbit that use to be in the same cage but we put him in a cage by himself.  They have a large 3 story cage, litter box etc. So they are well cared for.  Pleas let me know if you have ever heard of this illness or have any idea on what to do.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
I am curious why they just didn't neuter him rather than try to repair the damage.

Generally when their parts are injured, enlarged, or have lumps, neutering would be the next course of action.  Male rabbits can develop testicular cancer, I once had a 8 year old male rabbit neutered for that reason.

If the vet uses isoflourane as the anesthetic, the rabbit should make it through surgery ok if the vet is experienced doing surgery on rabbits.

Certainly your rabbit could have an infection, but if that were the case you'd likely see an abscess or a lump that could be expressed.

It could also be a reaction to something in their environment, such as an allergic reaction.

I am sorry the other bunny is no longer with us.
