QuestionThis is our first rabbit. I don't know what kind she is as she was given to the kids by my sister-in-law. She is mostly white with a couple of black spots. We've had her about 2 months and I've never noticed her ears to be blue on the inside. I know they weren't when we first got her. My kids noticed as they were playing with her today. What causes this?
AnswerDear Laura,
As long as her lips and skin are nice and pink, the blue sheen is nothing to worry about. It's probably a refractive color due to the way the skin inside her ears reflects the light. Although the ears themselves are highly vascularized with lots of veins and arteries, they are mostly at the periphery of the ear. The center is thick cartilage, and the way the skin stretches over the hard tissue underneath can give it a shiny, almost bluish tinge.
If she has dark spots on her ears, then it's even more likely that the dark pigment on the outside of the ears, filtered through the cartilage and other tissues of her ear, looks a little bluish. It's just another reason to think she's pretty! :)
