Rabbits Fits

Question
Hi Amie, Last night our beloved rabbit Frodo was in the lounge and when we looked down at him he was on his back with his paws up in the air moving about. We rushed over to him and immediately I picked him up and held him. He didnt seem particularly distressed or any thing and when we put him back down he was fine. He then continued to eat and drink as normal. Does this sounds like it might be a fit?. He was only there for probably 20 seconds at the most and we do wonder if he was scratching his ears and fell over on one side that way. He has seemed a bit unstable lately when he has been scratching. He has recently suffered from flystrike and the poor little thing has had his front top teeth removed last year due to them growing crooked and he isnt even 2 years old yet! I assure you none of this is due to mistreatment as we love him like he is a son. I would be grateful for any advice you can give, but will take him to the vets tomorrow morning anyway as when I spoken to them and  they suggested he may have to have his ears checked as that would make him unstable. Many Thanks Claire

Answer
Hi
Well when you saw your rabbit on his back. Was he struggling to breath. When rabbits have fits then are most of the time lieing on there side and are shaking. They also have there mouth open and are struggling to breath. If he was just on his side with hispaws in the air then he may just have fell over. But if he was shaking with his mouth open, then i would take him to a vet stright away to be checked over.lots of things can cause a rabbit have a fit.

If a rabbit does have a fit then they do go back to normal. But some rabbits who are not strong enough do die 1 hour after the fit. Only strong rabbits can survive them.

If he did just have a little fall after scratching his ear they he may be a little unstable. He may just have had a little fright when he fell. But dont worry about that to much.

Fly strike is a horrbile thing for a rabbit to have. I had to have my rabbit put down because of flystrike.
flystrike is the sort of thing that you dont find out about till the very last mintue.
But to help stop him from getting any moreflystrike then you can buy  "Keep It Clean" this is what i have started to use on my other two rabbits. Since i had to have myother rabbit put down because of fylstrike, i want to make sure my other rabbits dont get it. "Keep It Clean" is really good. You can use to spray in the hutch when you have took all the hay out. You can spray it on clean hay, and even better you can spray it on your rabbit. It wont harm him at all. The best place to spray it on your rabbit is near his bum. That is where all flys go for. If youy spray iton hisbum it will help stop the flys.

Dont worry i know you look after your rabit very well. If you didnt then you wouldent be asking for my help.

I reallyhope your rabbit is ok.If you need any more information please let me know.

good luck
