My Rabbit eats cat food

Question
My rabbit is about 6 months old and I let her roam around the house unless I am not home. I feed her everything that has been recommended and she seems very healthy. When I let Pancakes out of her cage she runs for the cat food and eats as much as she can before I take it away she also sits in the cats food not allowing the cat to eat. I am sure cat food is not healthy for her what can I do?

Answer
Dear Christa,

Before you let Pancakes out, be sure to put the cat food out of her reach.  You can leave a few little kibbles as a special treat, but cat food is far to high in protein and other nutrients to be healthy for a strict herbivore such as a rabbit.  It can be very hard on their kidneys in the long term.

Gradually substitute the cat food kibbles with other, rabbit-friendly treats such as fresh herbs, little bits of apple or carrot, etc.  Put them where the cat food is, and move the cat feeding area to a place where bun can't get at the food.  It's just not good for her, as you already suspect.

Hope this helps!
