One Floppy Ear

Question
Hello,
we have a 9 week old lion head bunny. Up until yesterday he seemed to be just fine with all activities just right, however yesterday when we came to let him out we noticed his left ear dragging on the floor  but his right ear was as per usual and standing proud. He seems to have a little control of his left ear as when he takes a drink from his bowl his left ear sometimes falls in his water. We've checked his ear inside and out and there is no signs of infection and he is still very happy and his usual bouncy self.
Can you help in diagnosing this problem?

Any help would be appreciated

Answer
Dear Tony,

Your bunny is at the age where--if he has any lop genes--they will start to be expressed in the form of one or both ears lopping down either all the way or partway.  But it's a little unusual for the ear to suddenly drop completely and the bunny have no control over its movement.  He may have injured it somehow, or this may be a very early sign of an ear infection.

To set your mind at ease, bring bun to a good rabbit vet for a full wellness check, especially for the ear.  You can find a good vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

If nothing's wrong, and it's just a genetically lopping ear, then at least you will already have a good rabbit vet lined up in case you ever *do* need one--which most of us eventually do.

I hope this helps.

Take care,
