Urgent inquiry regarding our bunny

Question

Ms Thumpletons bottom
First I will give a little back story.

We got our Holland lop bunny back in August. She came from a woman who bought her at the Humane Society as a rescue bunny from an abused home. When we received her, she seemed to be in alright health, although her tail was crooked. We didn't think anything of this though.

Ever since we got her, she has been a very messy bunny (which may explain why the woman who we purchased her from was getting rid of her. She did say that she needed a lot of care that she wasn't able to give due to business and such) Anyway, our bunny Thumpletons really likes to sit in her urine, and we have tried a few things to stop her from doing this, but nothing seems to work. This habit of hers ended her up with a pretty bad irritation and infection on her bottom which made a bunch of her hair on her bottom fall out. We took her to a vet who prescribed us medication for her which cleared up the infection and irritation she had, but the hair still hasn't grown in. we now rinse her bottom once a week and clean her cage a couple times a day to avoid future problems like that.

Recently, she got her tail caught in the bars of her cage, but by the time we got there to help her free, she had pulled herself out. The day after, when I was playing with her, I noticed that there was a lump protruding from her back end which I hadn't noticed before which really worried me. I think it may have been from when she had her tail caught, and she may have dislocated something. I may be looking in to things a bit far here as her tail was always crooked and she had fur on her bottom up until her infection, so we may just not have noticed the lumpiness before. I was looking at her bottom today because we just rinsed it a bit ago and noticed that there is a patch of either very dark blue, or black skin on her bottom to the side. It looks like a bruise, but I can't seem to find any information on it.

Thumpletons doesn't seem to be in any pain. She still jumps over things and onto us when we're on the floor. She is still eating everything we give her and she is still energetic, following us around and being a little nosey bunny. He personality hasn't changed at all and when we touch the area she doesn't react as if it causes her pain. We just don't know what to do.
Thanks Mitch and Kyla
P.S. We've attached a picture of the area, sorry it looks messy we just finished rinsing her bum and she was sitting in her shavings eating food prior to taking the picture.

Answer
Dear Kyla and Mitch,

It's very hard for me to see from the picture what is going on.  It's possible that the blue area is just where fur is starting to grow back in under the skin, but I can't really tell without seeing it in person.  And I can't really tell what lump you are talking about from the picture, either.

I would get her to a good rabbit vet for full evaluation and in-person exam, and you can find a rabbit-savvy vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

There is no reason for her to suffer from this continual urine leakage:  it is likely caused by a treatable condition, as you can read here:

If her bottom is messy with mushy poop, please read:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/poop.html

and

I hope the new vet will be able to find and treat the condition that's causing her woes.

Good luck,

Dana
