Baby bunnies - litter training and chewing

Question
Hi there. We brought home 8 week old baby mini lops 3 weeks ago, brother and sister, and they were partly litter trained when we got them. We're finding that they wee every time in their tray, but poo in their cage and occasionally outside of it. Its difficult to know how much of it is each of them as we work. We plan to have him neutered as soon as we see the signs - are we best to have her spayed as well, and will this help the situation, or do we need to just give them more time?
Also, the female is quite a chewer - carpet in particular - we're telling her firm 'no's' and have given her a carpet tile of her own to chew - do we just need to be patient or is there something else we can do?
We're new to owning bunnies so would really appreciate some advice....

Answer
Congratulations.  Baby bunnies are darn cute, but like all babies there's that learning curve they have to get over.  Young bunnies have litterbox issues, they just aren't mature enough to really "get" it.

You can read more about litterbox training and also spaying and neutering at http://www.rabbit.org/care/new-bunny-index.html

Chewing though is a whole other problem.  Bunnies have to chew, their teeth grow constantly throughout their lives.  Redirecting is a good thing.  Bunnyproofing might also help, if you haven't already.  There's information on that at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabcare.html#rabhome

Carpet seems to be a big favorite, so redirecting her to yet other activities or other chew toys is a good idea.  One place to find toys (or at least ideas) is http://www.busybunny.com/ another would be http://www.bunnyluv.com/  Many of the toys you can make or find locally, so hopefully this will distract her from her carpet fetish.

And yes, it is recommended to have her spayed also, female rabbits run a high risk of reproductive issues if they are not spayed.

Good luck!
