Pre-neuter bloodwork - what do they test for and why?

22 10:53:06

Question
I know this is sometimes done to make sure the rabbit is healthy enough.  What do they test for in the bloodwork, and why?

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

The basic blood values include a blood count (tallying up the number and proportions of the different types of blood cells), and electrolyte, kidney and liver values.

The blood count can indicate whether there is a cryptic infection that needs to be treated before the bunny can undergo surgery.  Electrolytes can tel whether the bunny is dehydrated, and along with liver and kidney values, can indicate that the major organ systems are working well.

The main idea is just to be sure the bunny is in good overall health, which is important for the best possible results for even a minor surgery.

Hope that helps.
