Coccidia treatment

Question
Hi Dana, was going to write to your email, but havent heard back from you last few emails, so thought I'd try you here for this question.
Cindi says you use something other then Albon to treat Coccidia?
Our shelter is looking into buying a large quantity of Albon. I was looking into buying the 12.5% and a way to dilute it down, but the only thing I can find so far to dilute with is Omega 3 Plus, on some dog site, and that appears to be some fish oil ting I think, so that doesnt sound good for bunnies.
Perhaps what you use is cheaper then Albon?
Did you see the pic of Cindis little skunk striped cottonbutt I sent you? She thought perhaps if he survives you might like him. He is quite unique, but unfortunately today has started the beginnings of diarrhea she thinks.
Let me know what you use for coccidia if you dont mind please?

Answer
Hi, Amy!

I didn't realize I hadn't answered your emails.  Really?  I could swear I had caught up on them!  I hope they didn't bounce, or get accidentally deleted as spam.  :(

We use Ponazuril to treat coccidia.  It is *very* effective, but it is horrifically expensive.  It was designed to treat a parasite much like E. cuniculi in horses, but it's also effective against other microsporidians, and we've found it to be *very* good against coccidia.

You can get a horse tube for about $175, and that will treat a LOT of rabbits, once it's diluted down to a proper concentration.  (If you decide to go this route, let me know, and I'll send dilution instructions.)  You can find product information here:

(Use for coccidia is still "off label," and is likely to remain so for quite a while.  So your vet has to be willing to do this.)

And here's a couple of places you can buy it online:

Hope this helps!
