Question
Hi, I just got a rabbit and I want to know what type it is and how old.  there is a website called popularpets.net.  under the rabbits section, there is a picture of a bunny that is white and blonde.  It looks exactly like mine.  Can you tell me what type of rabbit it is please?  I also would like to know how old she is.  I bought her from chinatown where it's infamous to sell illegal age pets.  My bunny keeps her eyes open quite a bit and eats solid pellets and treats, but not the lettuce - maybe it's the type of lettuce (romaine)?  She weighs exactly 6 ounces.  I predict she is about a month old.  What do you think?  Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi,

I can't really tell from the picture.  You could go to the ARBA website and try to review the breed categories more extensively.

Also, if she is that young (1 month) and she is young if she is only 6 ounces, DO NOT give her greens or fruit!!!!  Also no high-sugar items at all!

You could kill her at this young age with these, her gi tract is not set up right now to handle greens and fruits and high carb/high sugar items.

At one month, the only solids she should have now are Timothy and Alfalfa pellets ONLY, NO EXTRA JUNK INCLUDED.  Get pellets that are solely pellets.  Oxbow is extremely well liked by rabbits and it is very good nutritionally.  They make both Timothy pellets and Alfalfa pellets.  She can have both now as she is a growing rabbit.  The other thing she can have is timothy and alfalfa hay.  HAY IS THE MOST CRITICAL FOOD to have.  It is what they are designed to eat.  They can die without it.  It is so critical that rabbits can live only on good clean water and timothy/alfalfa hay alone.  They cannot live on any other food without hay.

Oxbow also packages alfalfa and timothy hay for sale.  Most rabbits (mine and others) will prefer it over other brands if you'd test them with several different brands.

You can also give her alfalfa/timothy hay cubes, but please know that these do not take the place of long fiber, regular hays.

Write back anytime.  Oh, check out the House Rabbit Society web site (www.rabbot.org) because they have hundreds of excellent articles on all aspects of rabbit care (and it is searchable).  Also, pick up a copy of The House Rabbit Handbook (4th Ed.) by Marinell Harrimann.  Great book for new rabbit owners.
