Question
i found a rabbit earlier during the day on my front lawn by my cat..apparently my cat was playing with it but no noticable damage...2 small teeth marks but nothing serious, deep, and no blood and the baby rabbit doesnt seam to be suffering. it has furr, a white spot on its head, but its eyes are still closed and he doesnt move around a lot..he cant stand on his own yet..he still crawls around..i have to take care of him for a day until my vet is open. what should i do? so far ive been giving him hydrating solution(salt sugar and water) every 15 min for the first hour..hes in a box with a mini stuffed animal cat (about the size of him) and a ticking watch and a contained of warm water next to him wrapped up...im going to bed..will he be fine until the morning? what should i do in the morning?

Answer
Dear Melissa,

This is a baby cottontail rabbit, and you definitely should get him to the vet ASAP.  Even a small cat scratch can cause fatal septicemia from Pasteurella multocida, which most cats harbor in their mouths and on their claws.  The baby needs to be put on Baytril or other fluoroquinolone to prevent this.

For information on proper feeding (no more sugar water!), please read:

I hope this helps, and that you can help him survive to be released.  Good luck!
