My buck is having behaviour issues

Question
Hi Samantha,

I am hoping you can help me.  I have a show coming up in 2 weeks.  I raise mini rex but it is my niece who shows.  I just haven't had enough quality in my own breeding program to get good show rabbits for myself yet.  Which stinks because some of the rabbits I have were very expensive.  Anyway, since I didn't have any show quality animals and she shows for both ARBA and 4-H I bought a few bucks for her to show.  I plan on using them in my own breeding program but want her to get the experience.  She is only 6 years old and is learning very quickly.  I usually bring them in the house to work with them before we go so that they will be used to being handled.  The breeder I bought them from never held them so they aren't exactly tame.

Ok my buck is 9 months old.  I have only bred him once and all the babies died which sucked.  But I have had him in the house for a little over 2 weeks now trying to get him ready for my niece to show him at a show coming up in 2 weeks.  I already sent in the entry fee otherwise I just wouldn't let her take him.  I hold him and he is all lovey dovey for about 2 minutes.  Then he will grab on to my arm and start to hump my leg.  I always tell him NO and he will stop.  But then I sit him on my lap and he decides to mark me and pee's all over me.  I tried to mate him back to one of my does hoping that this would solve his little hormone issue... BUT he wanted nothing to do with her, so I tried another one and the same thing.. He went to the corner of his cage and pouted.  She even tried to mount him and he just sat there.  He apparently thinks I am his girlfriend and I need to fix this.  He wasn't a cheap rabbit and I bought him specifically for his type and fur quality, plus he is the color I want.  What is going to happen if he tries to mount the judge while he is being shown, or worse decides to pee on the table.  Will he be dq'd for bad table manners?  I am going to keep trying to breed him hoping he will eventually like one of my doe's but I am just wondering if I should scratch him rather than have my little 6 year old go through the embarrassment if he pulls one of his stunts.  She still doesn't understand what they are doing when they mate.  She just thinks they are out on a date.  She is cute she tells me her buck that lives in the house is not allowed to go out on a date with his mate more than once per month.

I just need advise, is there anyway I can fix this problem or should I just scratch him?  Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Nela

Answer
I don't think he will act like this at a show. Usually you will have a change in attitude with them once they have traveled and went through the normal show stresses. The judge will not be just holding him so I feel he will not try to breed him. Rabbits can be a little strange at times. As for urinating on the table... this is a natural occurance and any judge who would even think to DQ a rabbit for this should have their licence removed. Just my opinion. He will probably be too scared at the show to spray urine.
I am glad you got a child so young already interested in rabbits. Hard work and determination is what it takes to perfect your herd. Good luck with your rabbits and showing.
