bathroom training

Question
I just got a Netherland Dwarf rabbit.  I read that it is possible to potty train them.  Is that true?  If so, how do you go about doing so?

Answer
All rabbits have the potential to be litterbox trained. The best way to start is to locate an area that they use the most in their cage to go to the bathroom. Most rabbits will pick a spot (usually a corner) to use as a bathroom. Once you find the spot, put a litterbox with clean litter and some of the rabbits dirty litter (including poop and pee) in it. This will give the box the smell of having been used, and the rabbit will think it went there before. Then it is more likely to use the litterbox.

Once it starts using it well in the cage, you can give the rabbit a small area around the cage to roam free in (be sure to rabbit-proof the house; tape all electrical chords out of reach, remove plants that may be poisonous, etc.). Leave the cage open. The rabbit should go back to the cage to urinate, at least. Some rabbits never fully litterbox train and will leave dry poops here and there, but most healthy rabbits can at least learn to urinate in the litterbox.

When the rabbit is consitant with going back to the cage to go to the bathroom, you can expand its free range area a little. Keep doing this until the rabbit has as much free range as you want it to have.

Keep in mind that young rabbits are harder to litterbox train, so if you have a baby, it may take much longer to get it to use the litterbox consitantly than it would with an adult.
