forgetful bunny?

Question
My rabbit is male and we've had him for a few years. He has been neutered.
In the last...year? he has started using my closet for a second litter box.  Not
my husband's side, or either of my girl's closets.  Not in any of his other
haunts.  Only on my side of the closet.  And it's hard to remember to keep the
door closed.  I just don't know what to do or why he's doing it.  I have
thought of just putting another litter box in there but I really don't want a
litter box in my room! Any thoughts or suggestions?

Answer
I understand not wanting to put a box in your room.  But now that he's started going there, it will be tough to get him to stop when the door isn't closed.

Since he started doing this, was there anything that might have changed?  Did a new person or animal move into the house.  Did you change to a different litter? Sometimes a change in the household will trigger litter box habit changes.

You can also try to make things more enticing in his normal litter box.  You can try filling it with hay.  Many rabbits love to sit in a box of hay, hang out, and nibble.

Have you ever noticed him having trouble getting in and out of the box.  Your bunny doesn't sound like he's old enough to get stiff and have trouble moving in and out of the litter box.  But it's just a thought.

And along those same lines, you may want to have him checked out by a vet just to rule out any medical problems that could cause a change in litter box habits.
