3 wild rabbits

Question
Yesterday am we found a dead rabbit on the road and this afternoon found a nest with 3 baby rabbits.  We're pretty sure these are the babies from the dead rabbit.  They are not weaned and their eyes are not opened.  We decided to bring them inside because there are many dogs and other wild animals, and sure their mother is gone.
They are taking milk drops from our fingers, and are getting more active than when we found them.
Is there any chance for them to survive?  What do we do to help their chances?
Thanks
Diane

Answer
Dear Diane,

Thank you for your kindness in trying to save these bunnies.  If it's not definite that the dead rabbit was the mother, their best chance is back in the nest.  Please write to me directly at dana@miami.edu and I will send you a long article on how to save wild baby rabbits if they truly are orphaned.

I hate to tell you this, but one of the WORST things you can do is feed them from your fingers.  Baby rabbits have a sterile GI tract at this stage, and your hands, no matter how thoroughly you wash them, are covered with E. coli bacteria that will kill them.  If it's not too late, please try to find a vet who can prescribe ciprofloxacin or Baytril (enrofloxacin) for a day or two--just to kill off the inoculum you've given them.  It will be a miracle if they do not develop fatal diarrhea after being fed from human hands.

I will wait to get an email from you at my own address, and then send you the information.  Good luck!

Dana
