electrocuted bunny

Question
I am a first time rabbit owner and thought my house was bunny proof. However, he came across the one cord that was not put up and electrocuted himself. I took him to my vet but she doesn't care for rabbits and is inexperienced in this area. She did research and put him on an antibiotic and painkiller. He burned his mouth and tongue but seems to be doing fine otherwise. Problem is he won't take any food himself by mouth. I have been feeding him baby food thru a syringe for 4 days. When I put his pellets down he goes crazy and wants to eat but can't. He also rejects softened pellets. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Answer
Have you been able to see inside his mouth to see where the burns are and if they are healing?  If it hurts to eat a rabbit just won't eat.  Will he eat baby food?  Or anything else that's soft?  If not, you may be syringe feeding him until the burns heal.

You could also see if you can find a vet in your area who does know rabbits.  Check your phone book to see if any vet says they work on exotics.

Burns can take several weeks to heal, so he may need your help to eat until he is healed up.  Be sure that you are aiming the syringe somewhere other than where he has burns, so they don't get accidentally rubbed open.
