Question
Hi I have a question regarding my 4month old bunny. I have tried everything but she wont stop chewing on everything...especially electrical cords! She has a ton of toys..a bunny cottage..cardboard tubes and she will hope right by them to get to the cords. I have tried making them smell bad..taste bad..I even used those things you put the cords in to protect them and she chewed right through them. I don't know what else to do and I'm afraid she's going to bite through one day and get zapped...Is there anything I can do to make her stop?

Answer
Oh boy, I had one of those once, no matter what you did, he would chew cords.  Even after I got some buddies for him.

Luckily rabbits tend not to get electrocuted as often as say, cats, who also can be cord chewers.  Some suggest that the rabbit mouth is dry enough to prevent them from getting shocked.  My rabbit never did.
But, that doesn't mean this isn't a problem.

If she's chewing through the cord protectors, there's a couple other protective things you can try.  I've covered cords in the soft foam stuff that you put around pipes to prevent them from freezing.  They already have a slit in them, so it makes them easy to slide over cords.  They're sold at any hardware store.  They've worked well for me.  But they are a bit ugly.

The other thing you can try is cutting up an old garden hose.  The rubber might be thick enough to deter her, or at least slow her down until you can redirect her behavior away from the cord.

You've probably already read some other tips including behavior modification through training, but I'll throw this site out: http://www.usask.ca/wcvm/herdmed/applied-ethology/behaviourproblems/chewingrabbi...

Maybe it has something that will work for your bun.

You may never completely break her of this, some rabbits are just always chewers.

But, she currently is at the most active stage of her life.  There will come a time when she will be less active and then might start leaving cords alone.
