fur ripped off

Question
I have a 1 yr old lop ear and a mini rex bun. They are pen mates and do fine together. I went to get the mini rex out of her cage and noticed what i thought was just loose fur, i didnt pull on it but instead held her and looked at the spot of fur, and it had been ripped off the flesh. There is no open wound but I am not sure if there is any infection risk or what to do next. they are indoor buns. please help, i have no rabbit vet close. Thank you

Answer
Dear Amanda,

If there is no open wound, and there is only fur missing, then there is almost no risk of infection.

If there is an open wound, however, cleanse it thoroughly and gently with dilute Betadine (about 1 part Betadine to five parts clean, lukewarm water) and keep it dry and clean until it scabs over.  Keep a close watch for any sign of redness or swelling indicating infection.  If you see that, then you must get him to a good rabbit vet:

If the rabbits are not spayed/neutered, then this might have been caused by a tiff between them.  This could get worse if they are now vying for dominance, and I would strongly urge you to have both spayed/neutered for their health and longevity.

Hope this helps.
