How soon can a doe become pregnant?

Question
Hello,

I rescued 2 baby bunnies apprx 2 months ago.  I brought them to the Vet because I couldn't determine the sex.  The vet said they were both does....no concern or hurry getting them fixed.  I've noticed that one of them is spraying...good sign of a buck...then tonight...I noticed that same bunny has testicles.  I am having them both fixed in 2 days......they are now about 3 months old....how old does the female (doe) have to be to become pregnant?????  I have them in the same hutch and let them run around together....they are now getting extremely frisky and chasing each other.....if it's too late.....can the Vet determine if the doe is already pregnant when she goes in for the spay?????

Please HELP!!
Brenda

Answer
Dear Brenda,

Three months of age would be *very* young for a female to become pregnant, though it's not impossible.  If she's pregnant, the vet might be able to tell, unless she's only a day or two pregnant.

I hope they're both being fixed at the same time, which give them a better chance to maintain their friendship after the surgeries.  I would not separate them for long, if at all.  Only if one is harassing the other would I separate them after surgery, since you don't want anyone injured.

Hope all goes well!

Dana
