Runny Eyes

Question
Hi,

I recently got married and my parents bunny sat while I was on my honeymoon.  When I got back, I noticed my bunny had a bit of a runny left eye.  I clean her "eye boogies" every day, but this isnt the same, its wet and a bit sticky as well.  It doesnt seem to bother her when I try to wipe it off, but my wiping is to no avail.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Jamie

Answer
Dear Jamie,

She may have a blocked tear duct, which can happen for many reasons from the mild (bacterial and cellular debris buildup) to the serious (tooth root intrusion, pinching off the duct).  A good rabbit vet can examine her and perhaps prescribe ophthalmic ointment (triple antibiotic plus a bit of corticosteroid) to see if that clears up the problem.

If it recurs, a tear duct flush might be necessary.  In some cases, the problem is chronic due to tear duct narrowing that comes with age and the anatomy of certain individual rabbits (especially dwarf and lop bunnies, who have shortened faces and dental problems to match).

You can read more here:

and find a good vet here:

Hope this helps.
