rabbit with damaged tendon

Question
Hi
my rabbit according to the vet has damaged the tendon in her toe on her left back leg.  she is still hopping round the garden but is reluctant to always put her hind leg down.  she is eating well and seems well but not hopping as fast as she normally does.  the vet gave her a pain killing injection and says she needs an x ray and then take it from there.  of course this could be very expensive and i would appreciate your comments.  many thanks.

Answer
Hi Hayley,

I agree with your vet.  Most likely a single rad should see any damage so the expense won't be so bad.  I would keep her on pain meds for a while.  Maybe a NSAID (anti-inflamatory) and a light narcotic for a few days if they pain persists.  It depends on the damage as to what course of action is needed.  Splinting that leg would be best but that is often very stressful and can result in collateral injury.  I would try to keep her as contained as possible for a while and allow the injury to heal.  Immoblizing the foot and keeping movement to a minimum....as well as time....is what is usually needed to heal these type injuries.
