Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have been breeding Mini Rex for about a year and I have a doe expecting her second litter. She is a larger doe than most her first litter was 7 and all survived. This time around she is on her 29th day today and she has made a nest with hay,but is chewing on her nest box and has been constantly cleaning her paws to the point she is chewing on them and has made one a bit bloody. She didn't do this the first time around and on a physical inspection she seems very large and heavy. How can I tell if this is distress and how can I help her?

ANSWER: hi usually when they chew on the paws it means the claws are to long and may be aggrivating her -also i have 1-2 inches of sawdust in my cages for them to run on .this prevents sore hocks.what doyouhave in the cage?

QUESTION: I have a standard breeder cage mat and her nest box. I trimmed her nails right before I bred her though. It just seems like something is aggravating her because she's chewing on everything. I give her pine blocks and salt licks but she just seems very irritated that's why I was worried that she might be carrying too heavy. She also hasn't eaten very much in a week but I know they stop eating before kindling.what are the signs that a Mini Rex is carrying too heavy?

Answer
hi-your setup seems ok but her being heavy should not be the problem -as you say something is irritating her so i would advise having her checked over by a vet to see if he can find what is causing her this stress.its a problem i have never had to face.
