Question

TarQuinn
Hi Dana,

A slightly odd question for you: I have a 4 1/2 mth old Lionlop doe named TarQuinn. I assumed ownership of her when she was rather young (a little over a month old), and I originally thought she had blue eyes, but as she's grown up, it actually seems as though her eyes are not only blue, but brown as well. The bottom half the former, the top the latter.

She doesn't seem to have any issues with her sight, but I suppose she's still young yet. Do you know if this is something I should keep an eye on (pun not intended!), or is this just a case of a fluke in genetics?

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Dear Nichole,

The bicolored iris you describe is actually not all that uncommon in rabbits.  We've had several bunnies with blue and brown patched irises, and it's nothing to concern you.  It's just a fluke of genetics.

Color like this can be due either to the expression of a piebalding gene in the iris (in this case, melanin is not deposited in patches of the iris, leaving only the blue "refraction" color) or to a somatic mutation.  In the case of your bunny, who is piebald (pigmented with white patches), the former is more likely.

Enjoy those pretty eyes!
