Question
Hello,
My daughter had a dutch bunny about 5 months old, he was plump and happy, the weather just dropped to freezing here in Alaska, but he had a heated area he could hop to with a 100 watt bulb to escape to the warm. Many rabbits live in far colder conditions that this, so, im not convinced it was the cold. He was found with his head to the side and his leg strectched out. He had runny diareah and white in his poop a month or so ago, but we figured it was from the potatoe rinds we gave him. We also had carpet pad in the cage to insulate on the walls and saw it was chewed. Could that of poisined him? The other rabbits seemed fine though. I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you@

Answer
Rabbits are so good at hiding illness that it is difficult to know for sure what could have killed him.

Only a vet performing a necropsy would have a chance to tell you what killed your rabbit, and even then, sometimes the cause of death isn't very obvious.

While he may have ingested some of the carpet, there is a chance it could have passed through his system.  Rabbits chew all kinds of things and it is difficult to know if the carpet passed through the system or got stuck.  If it did get stuck it may have just been a symptom of the underlying problem that may have killed him.

I'm sorry I can't tell you what killed him, but every rabbit owner at some time goes through the dreaded surprise death of a seemingly healthy rabbit.
