Question
I am a foster home in Portland, OR. I just lost a 9 month old female (Moon Shadow) to this parasite that I know little about. She was bonded to her sister. I was feeding her by hand. A mix of Critical Care, pumpkin puree and acidophilus. She spiraled down hill and lost her appetite. Can you tell me more about this parasite and if the other rabbits from this litter are at risk? A necropsy is being done but we don't have the results yet. Thanks for any insight. Jan

Answer
Dear Jan,

I am sorry about the loss of your bunny.

Unless your bunny had an extreme infestation of stongyles (a type of nematode roundworm), it's very doubtful that they were the cause of death.  These are not uncommon, and they are easily and effectively treated with Panacur (fenbendazole).  We have sanctuary jackrabbits who carry these little beasties, and we treat them regularly to prevent parasite overload.  So far, no serious complications from the parasite.  (A parasite's rule of thumb:  don't kill your host, or you're dead, too.)

A parasite infestation can weaken a host animal, but unless it's really bad, it's not likely to cause death.  I hope the necropsy will reveal what happened and give you some peace of mind.

I am very sorry.

Take care,

Dana
