My bunny died suddenly

Question
Hi there
My german lop buck died yesterday morning.  We took him to the vet the night before because he hadnt eaten his pellets or hay which isnt like him at all.  He would eat green but very very slowly, he was also drinking.

The vet said his teeth were looking a little sharp so they kept him in overnight to look at them properly under a general the next day.  Despite them giving him a gut stimulant that night and the next day he never ate and passed away early morning.

He does have a history of a poopy butt, which we have had meds for, cut back on greens & pellets and upped the hay intake etc.  He also had his teeth filed down about 8 weeks ago as they were a wee bit sharp.

We dont understand what went wrong, he got a controlled diet of quality pellents and greens, and loads of hay every day.  The poopy butt was a problem on and off for about 2 years but the vet wondered if he was just lazy as he wasnt vey good at grooming himself at all and was always all messy.

We are worried we did something wrong to our poor wee guy.

Any knowlegde or advice greatly received.

Alex

Answer
So sorry about your guy.

It really sounds like you did all you could for him.  You managed his diet and poopy butt issues and he was under the care of a vet.

Rabbits are real tough to figure out when an unexpected death occurs.  They're really good at making you feel like a bad parent when something goes wrong.  And they are very good at hiding illness.

It's possible that there was something going on you and your vet couldn't see, and just a little bit of a problem pushed his system over the edge.

If you really wanted to know, your vet could perform a necropsy.  But sometimes those don't tell the cause.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, but you did good by him.
