My vet diagnosed my rabbit with hemophilia.

Question
My rabbit savvy veterinarian did a blood test on my dutch mix rabbit just before she was to be spayed.  The blood test revealed that she could not clot, and after several more tests she was diagnosed with hemophilia.  She also has the most brittle nails I've ever seen.  The vet put her on vitamins, but her nails break continuously, even when I've just trimmed them. I have never even heard of another rabbit with this condition, and I have a couple questions.

First off, what does this mean to the care of my rabbit?  I have two other rabbits right now that are both spayed and both housed separately.  I let her out to run supervised several hours a day.  I cannot let her run around unsupervised, even in my bunny-proofed house, because last time she broke a nail and I came home to bloody footprints all over the place.  I also take precautions when clipping her nails not to accidentally cut them too short.

She however has become aggressive toward the other bunnies, as well as my puppy.  She is about a year and a half old now, and she mounts everything in sight, and obsessively digs out her litter pan.  I know the most common solution to behavioral problems is to spay/neuter, but this is impossible because of her condition.  What other methods are there to control her behavioral issues, without risking her health?

Answer
Dear Amanda,

Your rabbit may have blood that is congenitally slow to clot, but if she had true hemophilia, she would have died from a broken nail.  Broken nails can take a very long time to stop bleeding, and it doesn't mean your rabbit has a blood disorder.  I have never heard of a rabbit with true hemophilia.

I think I would find another rabbit-savvy vet for a second opinion:

Mention the previous diagnosis to the new vet and see what s/he says.  I would hate for your bunny to have to suffer through hormone-driven craziness and aggression because of a misdiagnosis, so I'd want to be really, really sure that a spay is not an option.

Hope this helps.
