correction on E. cuniculi question

Question
Dana,

I made a mistake with the medication name, the rabbits are on Albendazole.  (I was looking at the cat meds.)  Sorry about that.

Answer
Dear Susanne,

Your bunnies are on albendazole for E. cuniculi?

I will not second guess your vet.  But I will say that I would not allow this drug to be given to my rabbits.  It is highly toxic and a powerful radiomimetic drug that has been linked to several acute rabbit deaths.

Our vets use Panacur and/or ponazuril (the combination of both has worked well for us).  Panacur (fenbendazole) is a less toxic relative of albendazole, and it has *at least* as good results for treating E. cuniculi as albendazole.

You might consider finding another rabbit-savvy vet here:

for a second opinion about the proper medication for this.

Good luck,

Dana
