Question
I have two bunnies, a female lop and a male, i wasnt informed of his breed when we purchased him but i think he is a dwarf as he has short ears, but he is a bit bigger then my mini lop. however i want to know if it would be alright to breed these to. the live in seperate hutches at the moment but when i let one out it will run to the other and lie by her cage and clean her around her head. they very much want to 'get it on' but i want to check that it is ok first as they are different breeds obviously.

Answer
Hi Jenni,

technically speaking, it is possible to breed them.

Personally speaking I discourage the average owner from breeding.  Especially if you are doing it primarily for sales, if that is your main motivator.  There is such overpopulation and supply of domestic pet rabbits signifcantly outpaces demand, so much so now that rabbits are the 3rd most turned in pet animals to shelters.  Thousands of perfectly fine and decent rabbits are put down each year because people keep cranking out bunnies for the pet stores, and people buy them without being educated as to what to expect, and eventually they get turned in to the shelter.

My suggestion if you want additional rabbits, just for yourself, is to adopt one from your local rabbit rescue group or animal shelter.  Give an already fine rabbit a second chance at a good life.  And conside spaying and neutering your existing rabbits so accidental litters won't occur.
