Wild baby bunnies out of their nest?

22 11:15:12

Question
Hi - my name is Jenna. I live in Macomb, IL and just this morning while I was taking my dog outside, I saw 5 newborn baby bunnies in my backyard. They weren't in a nest and there wasn't a nest close by. They aren't covered up at all and they are all huddled together to keep warm. I'm nt sure if I should do anything since they aren't hidden at all and there is a pesky cat who frequently roams the area and has killed other animals before. I called a wildlife rehabilitator from Pekin, IL but because of the holiday, they said that they would be unable to do anything until tomorrow. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help these poor little guys.

Answer
Dear Jenna,

If the cottontail babies have their eyes open and are fully furred, then they probably have recently left their nest, or were frightened out of it by something.  Look around well, and see if you can locate the nest, which will probably be in a well of grass, quite hidden.

If you find the nest, you can fill your hands with fresh grass and--without touching the babies with your skin--gently replace them in the nest.

For more complete information on what to do if they are truly orphaned (and how to know that), please see:

Hope this helps.
