Carafate use for rabbits

Question
Dana,
My rabbit Neala has been battling kidney failure for several months and does not want to eat.  My vet is an excellent exotic vet.  I asked her for a prescription of Carafate because I read that this might help her ulcers.  Do you have any experience giving Carafate to rabbits?  My vet had never prescribed it for rabbits since it should be given on an empty stomach.  My vet is concerned that the Carafate will bind with the Amphojel, Tramadol and Pepcid that I am giving my rabbit and the medications will stop working.   I give Neala the Carafate at least 20 minutes after her other medications.   What is your experience with giving Carafate with other medications?  Thank you!

Answer
Dear Melissa,

Our vets prescribe carafate at 0.5cc/kg of bunny. But there is a concern that it could interact with other drugs.  I would recommend not giving the carafate to your bunny for at least an hour after you have given the other meds.

Also note that antacids can interfere with the ability of the carafate to bind to any ulcerated areas in the intestine.  So not sure how well this will work.

I hope your sweet bunny will be as comfortable as possible during this ordeal.  My thoughts are with you.

Dana
