Question
I am 16 and breeding my rabbits for the first time, i have a few questions. My rabbit is a 2 year old jersey wooly. What do i do if she never makes a nest because it seems like she should have already built her nest? she is 28-29 days in.
Do i add hay a few days before so she can make it into her nest or do i just let her use her fur for the nest?
(this questions a little late but) does it put the doe in danger if you breed for the first time around 2 years old?
I am afraid I'm going to do something wrong because this is the first time and i don't want to loose my bunny.
What is a danger for her being pregnant like being picked up or something? do i want to not brush her before she has the kits so she has more fur for her nest?
I'm sorry for the questions i just don't want anything to go wrong and have it be my fault.

Answer
Hi Mandy. You need to give your doe a box to build her nest in. The box needs to be about 12x12 or 12x14. If you have not purchased a nest box you can use a cardboard box since you need one now. Be aware that your doe may chew this box up. You need to get some straw or hay and put in the box. Fill the box about half full. Your doe will now do the rest. She may not make her nest until she goes into labor or she may start on it now. She needs the box and hay NOW though. If this is the first time your doe has had babies she may become confused as to what to do and you may loose some or all of the kits. This is not unusual. You can not help the doe during birth. Leave her alone and quite. Do you have her inside? It is too cold in much of the country to have babies outside right now. It is up to her now. I don't think she is in any more danger because you waited till she was two to breed her. I would not handle her too much right now. Just leave her quiet. Let me know how things go and if there is anything I can help with in the future. Good luck to you both!  Pat
