Rabbit genitalia

Question
I have a 8 month old lionshead rabbit.  While holding him on his back and scratching his tummy I came upon something I can't figure out.  I was told he was a he from the breeder. At the very bottom of his tummy before his anus there are 2 tubula 'glands?' They sort of remind me of swollen vaginal 'lips' but with close inspection there is no vaginal opening.  I then wondered if they were 1 engorged mammory glands. I am not even sure that a male rabbit can have these.  I did locate what appears to be a penis, which was located right before his anus towards his belly.
I am worried that they may be something medically wrong with him.  I hope you have an answer for me.

Thank you.

Answer
Dear Karen,

What you probably saw was his scrotum, and if he was being held upside down, he might have retracted his testicles defensively, leaving the scrotal sacs looking a bit smaller than they would otherwise be.

You can find pictures of sexing rabbits here:

http://www.rabbitnetwork.org/articles/sexing.shtml

to compare with what you saw.  But if you're still in doubt, find a good rabbit vet from the list linked here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

and that person will be able to sex your pal, or tell you if there is anything wrong.  From your description, I don't think so.  But always better to have someone check in person, since it's hard for me to see what you're seeing over the internet.  :)  (If you can take a clear picture and attach it here, I can better help you.

Hope this helps.
