Urgent -- update to Carefresh w/ baking soda

22 9:39:34

Question
I spoke with the Carefresh product rep and they use a liquid (not powder) baking soda in the manufacturing process to reduce the acidity of the paper.  They claim this is safe for bunnies who nibble on the litter and dig in it and that the addition of "with baking soda" was a marketing idea.  Do you think it really is safe for my bunnies? Thanks!

Answer
Dear Cathie,

I have never used Carefresh, but don't think that having liquid vs. powder would make much difference, except perhaps in the concentration of the sodium bicarbonate.

I doubt there would be enough sodium bicarbonate in a bit of paper nibbled to do harm.  But I use pelleted pine sawdust (Feline Pine; horse bedding), which completely avoids that problem.

Hope this helps.
