Question

bad skin
Hi, I have recently stumbled upon 5 abandoned pigs. Originally  there were 18 of them but they died due to starvation and neglect. The 5 surviving pigs have a few major issues that I'm trying to address and if you could help me I would soooo appreciate it.  It's one of the older female pigs. Her skin is so dry that it has become thick and cakey. It's like nothing I've ever seen. It peals off in big blobs and in places is raw flesh. I thought possibly mange but Im just guessing. I can't help but feel that it is some kind of parasite or bug. Or it could just be severe dry skin that hasn't been addressed for so long that it has come to this.I know that I need to have a vet out to see her (all of them)but in the mean time. Help! Rebeka

Answer
Rebeka,
This appears to be  severe dry skin and perhaps a nutritional problem that will eventually get better.
Be sure ALL pigs are treated twice, 14 days apart  with an injection of Ivermectin for sarcoptic mange. They should be eating a good pbp feed, like Mazuri, with Omega 3 and 6 caps (fish and flax oil). Double the adult dose, give daily. Give fresh dark vegies, like spinach.
Make sure lots of fresh, clean water is available,it is amazing how dry the skin on a potbellied pig can get.
We had one like this, we took it to the vet 3 times.
It never looked great, but the oil caps or Essential Fatty  Acid tabs  will help. (The breed originally came from a moist jungle climate)
Some pigs actually seem to have a genetic predisposition to this.
Bless you for rescuing these poor pigs.
