Question
Our pot belly is three years old know and has been out side for two of those years. She has been doing great and is on a specieal pig diet of her pig food and vegetables. In the last three months our pig started loosing weight and so we started double feeding her and she has went from 250 to 100 she looks alwfull and she eats and drinks good every time we feed he and water her. There is no vet in my area that can see her and the closest one is four hours away. What do you think we should do? I think put her down, I have never seen her like this.

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and can not make a medical diagnosis over the internet. Older pigs sometimes experience unexplained weight loss. But in a young pig like yours, it's very rare.

It's possible your pig has internal parasites. If this is the case, medication can clear up the problem fairly quickly. Most vets prefer to see a pig before prescribing medicine, but worming medicines are available over the counter from places like Jeffers.com and ValleyVet.com Most of these are made for full size farm hogs, so you might have to do some math to determine the correct dosage for your pig. Double check the math, and weigh your pig accurately.

Is your pig spayed? If not, she might have uterine tumors or infections. Spaying will fix this.

If her food is not good quality, she may not be getting the nutrition she needs from it. Switch to a different brand, or try some hog grower (until she gains the weight back) or add a couple of Ensures or Boosts to her daily diet.
