SICK PIGGY

Question
I have a four year old female PBP and she ate this morning and was fine now she is laying on her side (sickly) and has a high pitched squeal like she is in pain. She has never done this before. Our vet said to give her an antibiotic and she seems to be getting weaker. Our vet has no clue what could be wrong. Please help us save our little girl.

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and I can not give a medical diagnosis over the internet.

Pigs are very good at hiding minor symptoms, so many illnesses that start slowly are overlooked until the problem becomes serious.

Does your pig have any welts or sores that seem to appear out of nowhere? If so, your pig may have Dippity Pig. It's a scary problem and painful for the pig, but luckily it's over quickly, within 24 - 48 hours. It usually strikes very young pigs, so that may not be the problem here.

Has piggy been going potty ok? If the bladder or colon can not empty, they will eventually burst. Another possibility along these lines is a kidney or uterine infection (if your pig is not spayed).

Accidental poisoning is another possibility. So is erysipales.

FAREC (Forgotten Angels Rescue and Education Center)has experienced pot-bellied pig veterinarians that are willing to work with local vets. They may be able to help your vet determine the best course of action. Contact information is on their website www.farec.org
