Question
I have a 8 month old pig whom ive just started to train with a harness (i know its kind of late to be training him now). when i walk him outside in the backyard, he doesnt really want to walk. than i tried to take him out in the front and he goes crazy. he has escaped a few times through the front yard and ran out into the streets and its as if he changes. he no longer listens and not even food gets to him. why does he go crazy once hes out in the front yard?

Answer
Without more information, I can only guess. I am assuming that your back yard is fenced and the front yard is not.

Is your pig neutered? If not, his wanderlust is due to hormones. He wants to find a true love, and is smart enough to know that he's not confined in the front the way he is in the back. Intact pigs of either sex are expert escape artists. They love to get out and roam neighborhoods looking for love. If your pig is neutered, but still shows signs of being intact, like humping, excessive foaming, etc., he may be cryptorchid (has a retained testicle).

Another possibility is that something in the environment in the front is very different from the back. If the back is small and enclosed with little room to run, or mostly paved, but the front is a wide open grassy space, that could be the difference. He may simply be taking advantage of the opportunity to run. It could be noise from traffic, machinery or animals like barking dogs. The scent of roaming neighborhood dogs could be bothering him. Yet another possibility is that when he escaped once, he found something incredibly tasty and wants to find it again.

I highly recommend the book Pot-Bellied Pig Training and Behavior by Priscilla Valentine. Pris really understands how pigs think, and why they do the things they do. Her insights into "pig think" might help you pinpoint what is making your pig act so differently.
