Question
I just purchased my first pot bellied pig - he is 6 weeks of age....he is not on a starter - should he be? and what amount of regular feed should I feed him? 1/4 cup? 1/2 cup? and will this amount be daily? I find lots of info on feeding but I don't find anything for a new born - they talk about starter food but he's not on that - the breeder had him on it until he was 5 weeks and then started feeding regular food....is this proper?

Answer
At 6 weeks it's ok for him to be eating regular pot-bellied pig chow. How much food depends on a number of factors including the kind of food, pig's age, environment, exercise, etc. Young pigs need to eat a lot because they are very active and growing, but not so much that they become obese.
A general rule of thumb is 2 cups of pot-bellied pig food per day (1 cup per meal), less for inactive adult pigs, plus some fresh veggies or occasionally, fruit.
If your piglet was fed considerably less start with at least 1/2 cup per meal per day and increase the amount at each meal.
Be sure to count training treats! For example, if you're feeding the piglet 1/4 cup of Cheerios or raisins during training, subtract 1/4 cup of pig food. The problem is that the treats aren't as nutritious as the pig food, that's why it's so important to limit them.
After your pig has been eating a stable diet, such as 1/4 cup treats, 1-3/4 cups chow, and 1/2 cup shredded lettuce for a couple of months, it's time to start monitoring his weight. Back bones, rib bones, and hips should NOT be showing. Also, he should not look like he has just swallowed a basket ball, either. If he is too thin, increase the amount a little bit at each meal until he looks good. If he is too heavy, decrease the amount of food slightly and increase his activity level by encouraging him to play.
